Registration of Ghana Card begins today

The nationwide registration for the National Identity Card (Ghana card) begins today May 28, 2018.

Head of training at National Identification Authority (NIA), Abdul Ganiu, who disclosed this on Adom FM’s Morning Show “Dwaso Nsem” Monday said the Ghana Card, will replace sectoral identity cards in circulation.

He said it will become the only card to be used in transactions where identification is required as provided by law.

The National ID card is to help formalize the Ghanaian economy through the establishment of a credible national database.

The project, which started under the Mahama government, was re-launched by President Akufo-Addo in September 2017 and new registrations will be carried out through out the country.

NIA had targeted to complete the first phase of the registration exercise by October 15, 2017 but it failed to do so, following delays in amending portions of the bill backing the project.

Mr Ganiu indicated that registration is starting from the Greater Accra region on May 28 and that the NIA expects to register all Ghanaian citizens in Ghana within one year.

From Greater Accra, the registration team will move to the Volta Region followed by Northern, Upper East, Upper West, Brong Ahafo, Western, Ashanti, Eastern and Central regions.

Documents such as driving licences, National Health Insurance cards, and baptismal certificates and voters identity cards are no longer tenable as sources of identification for the Ghana Card.

Only birth certificates and passports, he noted, will be used as identification for the acquisition of the card, as provided for by the National Identification Amendment Law 2017 (Act 950).

Abdul Ganiu said the National Identification Authority has recruited and trained 2,700 commissioners of oath to operate alongside the staff of the NIA during the registration for the Ghana Card.

Why Ghanaians Are So Slow To Bury Their Dead - BBC

In our series of letters from African journalists, writer Elizabeth Ohene considers why bodies are not buried for months, sometimes years, in Ghana. This past week there was another one of those typically Ghanaian funeral stories in the news. The body of a chief who had died six years ago was still in the morgue as the family bickered over who should be designated as the "chief mourner". I was, as is usual with me, outraged. But the story did not attract much attention because we regularly leave dead bodies in the morgue for long periods to sort out the disputes that erupt after every death in this country. Our elaborate, expensive funerals and over-the-top dramatically carved caskets are well documented. In spite of the keen interest I have taken in trying to work out how funerals came to have such a hold on our society, there are some things that I still cannot understand after all these years. Fantasy coffins I have to keep on trying to find explanations.
