Owner of Obengfo hospital arrested, hospital closed down over death of woman

The late Stacy Offei Darko

Owner of Obengfo Hospital at Weija in Accra, Dr. Dominic Obeng-Andoh, has been arrested by the Nima police following the death of the Deputy Chief Executive Officer for National Entrepreneurship Innovation Programme (NEIP), Stacy Offei Darko at the facility.

Mother of the deceased, Nana Akosua Animah I, who disclosed this on Accra-based Okay FM, Tuesday said her daughter who is 37 years old, fell ill and sought medical attention at the Obengfo Hospital but died on Monday after her admission.

According to her, the hospital authorities decided to deposit her body at the morgue, four days after her death, without informing her family.

“My daughter wasn’t sick; she only went to the hospital for a medical checkup last week Saturday evening. Stacy had promised to see me on Monday, unfortunately, I never heard from her, so I kept calling her phone.

“In fact, I became very worried when all her calls went unanswered until on Wednesday when a nurse answered the phone and told me she was in a critical condition. I was forced to rush to the hospital, only for me to be informed that my daughter had come to the hospital for a checkup and while she was receiving treatment, she passed on”, she said.

She accused the owner of the Obengfo Hospital of having a hand in the death of her daughter, adding that her daughter was not given proper treatment.

The doctor and a cleaner, she said, were consequently arrested last Thursday and are helping the police in their investigations at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ghana Police Service (CID).

The Obengfo Hospital has since been closed down.

Why Ghanaians Are So Slow To Bury Their Dead - BBC

In our series of letters from African journalists, writer Elizabeth Ohene considers why bodies are not buried for months, sometimes years, in Ghana. This past week there was another one of those typically Ghanaian funeral stories in the news. The body of a chief who had died six years ago was still in the morgue as the family bickered over who should be designated as the "chief mourner". I was, as is usual with me, outraged. But the story did not attract much attention because we regularly leave dead bodies in the morgue for long periods to sort out the disputes that erupt after every death in this country. Our elaborate, expensive funerals and over-the-top dramatically carved caskets are well documented. In spite of the keen interest I have taken in trying to work out how funerals came to have such a hold on our society, there are some things that I still cannot understand after all these years. Fantasy coffins I have to keep on trying to find explanations.
