Gov’t extends validity of passport booklets to 10 years

The government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has extended the validity period of the country’s ordinary passport booklets from five years to 10 years. This comes after complaints by some Ghanaians that the five-year validity period was too short. An online petition collecting signatures to get the government to increase the validity had received more than 10,000 endorsements over the past few months. The Foreign Affairs Ministry in a memo all of the country’s foreign missions said “Missions are hereby informed that government has decided to extend the validity of ordinary passport booklets issued to qualified Ghanaian applicants from five years to ten years (5-10 years) with effect from 31st March 2019. JHS, SHS certificates to be upgraded to diplomas – Education Minister

 The Minister for Education has announced plans to upgrade the Senior High School certificate into a National Diploma certificate which can allow graduates gain employment after completion of their programmes. The Minister said it is unfair for young people in the country to be forced to complete University before being eligible for employment in the country. Speaking at the 2019 Danquah Institute Leadership lecture under the theme: “World Class Education and Imperative for the Next Generation of Leaders,” Matthew Opoku Prempeh said a new curriculum for Junior High Schools in the country will see JHS graduates completing with National Higher Diplomas while qualified SHS graduates will be awarded with National Diplomas. IGP moves 91 officers, new Commanders to be named next week

Some 91 uniformed senior officers of the Ghana Police Service and many in the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) are moving to new offices in a massive shake-up ordered by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu. A source in the Police hinted that the transfer is strategic, and in some cases involves officers who have been at their current locations for so many years. The transfers have nothing to do with Thursday’s aagbewoo’ demonstration organized by the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The shake-up has affected four Deputy Commissioners of Police, seven Assistant Commissioners of Police, 17 Chief Superintendents of Police, 15 Deputy Superintendents of Police, 25 Superintendents, and 20 Assistant Superintendents of Police.
