Police-Military clash: Ghana’s security still intact – Mpraeso MP assures

Member Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Seth Kwame Acheampong, says in spite of Wednesday’s clash between a group of soldiers and some police personnel in Tamale in the Northern Region, the country’s security is still intact.

According to him, it is important that Ghanaians allow the right authorities to investigate the matter.

“Parliament is dealing with the issue and so there is the need to allow authorities to investigate the issue before any punishment can be given, else we can’t jump to conclusions,” he said.

Some soldiers clashed with police officers in the Tamale Metropolis on Wednesday, resulting in injury to about seven of the police officers.

Reports suggested that police personnel who were on guard duties at various points in the metropolis were attacked by their military counterparts.

But speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen Thursday, Mr. Acheampong said the Defence and Interior ministers, Dominic Nitiwul and Ambrose Dery are to appear before the House Tuesday morning to give a briefing on the circumstances leading to the clash.

He, therefore, pleaded with Ghanaians to pardon the conduct of the security personnel and assured that measures will be taken by the ministers to avoid similar occurrences in the future.

Mauritania court gives toughest sentence for slave owners

Two slave owners in Mauritania have been jailed in a country where slavery remains widespread but convictions rare, activists say. The sentences of 10 and 20 years are said to be the toughest-ever for the crime in the West African country. Slavery was outlawed in 1981 but 1% of the population are still living in bondage, human rights groups say. Black people of certain ethnic groups are often enslaved as domestic workers by lighter-skinned Mauritanians. The country has jailed more anti-slavery activists than slave owners, rights groups say.
