University installs ‘cry closet’ for stressed-out students

Stressed-out students at the University of Utah can now let loose without having to worry about judgmental looks from their peers, thanks to a small ‘cry closet’ that allows them to cry in private. With homework, tough exams and student debt as high as it is these days, college an get pretty stressful, and sometimes you just need to cry before getting back on the horse. But not everyone is comfortable sobbing in public, so the University of Utah decided to help students let loose their emotions by installing a small cry room in the campus library. Created by University of Utah student and visual artist Nemo Miller in woodshop class, the cry closet is lined with a black interior, and features plush stuffed animals inside that students can hug and squeeze as they cry. Whether it’s midterm exams, getting dumped via text message or just having a bad day, students can cry in peace, at least for 10 minutes. That’s right, you can’t just spend the day in the cry

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has expressed disappointment that although many citizens are highly educated, they seem unable to apply the knowledge to improve the environment. In the past, the former President stated that, people with limited education conducted themselves more responsibly and protected the environment through clean sanitation habits. Rawlings, who was speaking at the launch of the ‘Clean Adabraka’ sanitation campaign on Saturday suggested that poor sanitation in the country was stifling its development. “If we do not improve our sanitation habits we will never develop. Man pours acid on wife

A man believed to be in his late forties has poured acid on his wife at Adukrom a suburb of Bibiani in the western region. The sad incident took place in the late hours of Thursday evening after an argument between the couple. The husband whose name was only given as Yaw Kyremeh, went into the room and came out holding a container which he emptied on his unsuspecting wife, Oforiwaa. The two have been living together for the past four years but have been having some sort of misunderstanding which neighbors believe could be the reason behind the incident. Some eyewitnesses who spoke to Rainbow Radio disclosed that, Mrs. Oforiwaa who sells coal in the area returned home late from work yesterday which caused her husband’s fury and that ended in the fight. Rawlings summons Asiedu Nketia, others over NDC election “malpractices”

Former President Jerry John Rawlings has expressed concerns over what he calls “reports of malpractices and abuse of process” in the party’s ongoing branch executive elections across various regions. University students protest over sex

Twenty-three students of Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) have challenged the university’s decision to suspend them for one year for allegedly indulging in sexual activities on campus. The affected students have written to the university management for a review of the decision by the disciplinary committee alleging that they were caught coupling in dark corners at the campus, contrary to university regulations. The affected students were given one week within which to appeal the decision should they feel the punishment was not just and fair. The 30-year-old institution, which operates on strict Islamic doctrines, bans physical touch involving hugging, pecking, and kissing between students of opposite sex. Bugri Naabu involved in accident, to be airlifted to Accra

The Northern Regional Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bugri Naabu has been involved in an accident. The accident, which occurred on Wednesday night, is said to have left Mr. Naabu in a critical condition. Citi News ’ Regional Correspondent, Abdul Karim Naatogmah, reported that efforts are being made to airlift him to Accra for better treatment. Karim said the accident occurred when Mr. Naabu was returning to Tamale from Damango after embarking on a campaign in the area and surrounding communities. He said all six occupants in Mr. Naabu’s vehicle also sustained some injuries. He however said the cause of the accident is not yet known, as persons who were part of Mr. Naabu’s convoy said they only saw his vehicle somersaulting while they were on their way to Tamale. Thunder strikes one dead at Denu

A member of the Church of Pentecost branch at Atsiafuni near Denu, one Rabi Butame, 30, was struck dead by thunder at the Church premises after a rainstorm last Friday. Two others; Mawuli Agblornu, 45, and Ernest Fodzenu, 38, were severely injured with burns all over their bodies. A source close to the Church told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) members of the Church were undertaking a construction work on the premises when the rain started, compelling them to stop the work temporarily. Two Police officers arrested for renting guns to robbers

he Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, is investigating two police officers for allegedly renting out their guns to suspected armed robbers. The accused officers are attached to the Weija District Police Command. According to police sources, the two were picked up after the suspected robbers in police custody revealed that they acquired their weapons from the officers. Reports say the robbers had been involved in a motor accident, and while they were being transported to a hospital by an ex-police officer, they began complaining that they had left their guns behind, fearing that the officers they rented the guns from would be in trouble. The ex-officer became suspicious and informed the police command to look into the matter. Two suspected officers believed to be involved in the criminal arrangement were found out and arrested for the further investigations. British-born Ghanaian stabbed to death in London

A 21-year-old man Kwasi Anim-Boadu, believed to be of Ghanaian descent, has been stabbed to death in the United Kingdom. Anim-Boadu was stabbed at Finsbury Park in the early hours of Saturday April 21, the UK-based Standard website has reported. He is the 39th person to be fatally stabbed in London since the beginning of the year. Announcing the tragic incident on social media, a sister of the deceased Naya wrote: “My younger brother, my only brother got stabbed to death this morning. Guys this needs to stop. Speaker recalls MPs from recess for ‘urgent business’

Members of Parliament have been recalled from their recess by the Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Mike Oquaye for the ratification of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. The MPs will be sitting on Thursday, April 26 and Friday, April 27, 2018. Taxi driver kills police officer at Doblo

taxi driver who was allegedly resisting arrest has killed a 44-year-old police officer attached to the Formed Police Unit (FPU) at the Doblo Barrier on the Amasaman–Nsawam Road. According to reports, the deceased, Sergeant Owusu Appiah was attempting to open and sit in the suspect’s car when the driver of the Hyundai Getz taxi sped off, knocking him in the process. The Vice-President has announced that Ghana Police can now be reached on the special emergency number 191 to address enquiries anytime and anywhere. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said the era of memorising and dialling different contact numbers for specific police stations and offices has become a thing of the past. “You can dial 191 from any part of Ghana and you will get a police call centre and they will respond to your needs. “We don’t have to try to remember many numbers of different police stations. Minister caught on tape trying to influence delegates in NPP elections

The acting Upper West Regional Minister is pushing delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the region to vote for his preferred candidate in the Chairmanship race. First world handwoven car made in Nigeria

Facebook removes ‘gay sex for rent’ posts

Facebook has removed a group in which landlords were offering young men free accommodation in return for sex. A BuzzFeed News investigation found dozens of UK posts on Facebook, Craigslist and RoomBuddies offering men a place to live in return for sex. Offering accommodation in exchange for sex is illegal under the Sexual Offences Act 2003. Facebook and RoomBuddies said they removed such adverts when they were reported. BuzzFeed News found posts on several sites including Facebook, created by men seeking “houseboys” or “live-in personal assistants”. Many of the posts were explicit about the nature of the agreement. “This position would ideally include sex and lots of affection from our boy,” said one post. “You will clean and provide sexual services in return for free accommodation and board,” said another. NPP defies court injunction to elect new executives

In spite of  a 10-day injunction   placed on the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Volta Regional Delegates Conference by a High Court in Ho, the party went ahead to elect its regional executives on Saturday. The former regional organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Makafui Kofi Woanyah, has been elected the new chairman of the party in the Volta region. Kofi Boateng had claimed he was not treated fairly and resorted to the courts. In the polls, Mr. Woanyah overcame competition from three other aspirants polling 296 out of the 497 votes at the St. Francis College of Education in Hohoe on Saturday. One-village-one-dam contracts awarded

Implementation of the government’s ‘one village one dam policy is to begin soon, a revelation by Defense Minister, Dominic Nitiwul suggests. Mr Nitiwul said that contracts have been awarded for the flagship project to begin. “Last week, contractors were issued appointment letters to go and construct 570 dams,” he said. Government’s anti-illegal mining taskforce, Operation Vanguard has destroyed some mining equipment belonging to a Chinese national, Aisha Huang, who is standing trial for illegal mining. Two mobile money agents shot dead by suspected robbers

Two mobile money agents have been shot dead by suspected armed robbers at Pelungu market in the Upper East region. The incident occurred today [Friday] afternoon at 12:15 pm. The two agents he noted have been confirmed dead. Issah Anthony revealed that the robbers numbering about 4 and riding two motorbikes robbed the First Allied Bank, electrical shops before robbing the mobile agents. He also reported that the alleged robbers are suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. Issah Anthony indicated that the robbers shot the agents because they realized they [agents] could have caused their arrest because they knew where the herdsmen rear their cattle. Ex-Ministers to face court over double salary – Martin Amidu hints

The prosecution of former ministers in the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration and Members of Parliament (MPs) who have been caught in an alleged double-salary scandal is imminent. It follows what looks like the special prosecutor’s endorsement of the move by the police to prosecute the former appointees, who served under then President John Mahama – majority of who are MPs in the current parliament.
